The Google Book Settlement

Many thoughtful voices are raising questions about the settlement, which still requires court approval. Here are two recent articles, each of which contains links:

I think it is beneficial for the books to be digitized and be searchable and available to the public. I do, though, have qualms about granting Google a monopoly. I would love to know what my readers think.

I share your sense that digitizing is beneficial, and also your qualms. I have a (maybe irrational) trust in Google. I think the fact that several major research libraries are allowing Google to digitize their collections says a lot. And who is else prepared to take on all this scanning work? But I also agree that a Google monopoly could be bad.
